There's no way to tell for sure whether a client is real or a script from looking at server logs, and the basic economics and techniques of spamming pretty much require that most of it is scripted. I don't like CAPTCHA much either, but requiring it for new account signups would almost certainly cut down on spam quite a bit. --R
