I think Colin remembered wrong :-)

If there's a "main" poll, that is what displays on the front page,  
regardless of how many stories have polls and where they're posted.  
The description Shawn posted is the correct, normal procedure for  
adding a front page poll, and it's been that way as long as I can  
remember. (I just checked the CVS logs, and it's almost exactly four  
years ago that the poll edit form gained a "make main" checkbox.)
