That depends on how the "recent" block is configured. It's entirely  
possible that the recent diaries list is set up to only show diaries  
(section "Diary") that are posted to the diary section page only  
(displaystatus 1). I believe recommended diaries are promoted to the  
front page, which means displaystatus 0, in which case the recent  
diaries list wouldn't see them.

You could change the code in that box to get diaries with both  
displaystatus 1 and 0, but you don't want to remove the displaystatus  
check entirely. When a story gets voted down or (in this case) if you  
have to hide a diary, it still exists in the database but has a  
displaystatus of -1, which means nobody but admins can see it. You  
don't want your recent diaries list to show hidden diaries...
