Then what is the "hide" option for?

Nope. That's how it works. If a user doesn't have rights to something, they
cannot see it.

I don't want anonymous users to have the ability to post comments or
anything else, but I want them to see that it would be possible. I thought
that setting their permission to Deny would do that, but it seems to hide
the ability to post comments altogether.
 
Did I overlook some setting or permission?
